Sir Bobby Charlton expects Wayne Rooney stay at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton insists that the club will not sell Wayne Rooney this summer.

Manchester United's leading goalscorer of all time Sir Bobby Charlton believes that Wayne Rooney will stay with the club beyond the end of the summer transfer window.

Recent reports have claimed that the England international is keen for a move after nine years at Old Trafford, with Chelsea said to be his preferred destination.

However, 75-year-old Charlton, who has a place on the club's board, has insisted that United do not make "rash decisions" over the sale of their best players.

"Wayne Rooney is a Manchester United player and I think that he will continue to be a Manchester United player," he told reporters.

"We are not silly enough to make any rash decisions. I don't like losing really good players and he is a really, really good player.

"I was hoping one day that he might score as many goals as I had and that would have been really nice if it was at our club – and I'm still thinking that way."

Rooney, 27, has two years left on his current United contract.
