Sam Johnstone set for talks over Manchester United future

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone says that he would prefer to go out on loan if Manchester United feel that they don't need him this season.

Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has not yet found out if he has a future at the club under Louis van Gaal.

The 22-year-old made 25 appearances on loan at Preston North End last season, helping the Lilywhites earn promotion to the Championship via the League One playoffs.

Preston are interested in signing him again, but he has played United's first two pre-season games this summer as speculation surrounding the futures of David de Gea and Victor Valdes continues.

Johnstone told PA that if Van Gaal feels that he is not needed, he would prefer to go out on loan again than be sold.

"If I go back out I would like it to be a loan," Johnstone said. "I have to see what happens here first.

"The manager here gives kids opportunities. I have been at this club since I was 10 years old so you have to look at it, speak to the right people and see what the club want from me.

"If they tell me it is time to move on then it is time to move on, but I will keep working hard here and impressing the manager."

Johnstone has never made a competitive appearance for United.
