Montpellier put five past Lyon

Montpellier put five past Lyon in an impressive win in this afternoon's Ligue 1 clash.

Montpellier have taken all three points with an impressive 5-1 victory over Lyon in this afternoon's Ligue 1 encounter.

Anthony Mounier had the first opportunity of the game after just two minutes, but his effort went wide of the mark.

Four minutes later, Bafetimbi Gomis had Lyon's first chance of the game, but the forward could not trouble the goalkeeper.

Montpellier took the lead on 16 minutes through Victor Montano, who finished well after being played in by Remy Cabella.

Jimmy Briand headed towards goal on 20 minutes, but the home side's defence cleared well.

Cabella almost doubled Montpellier's lead just before half time, but his effort was saved well.

However, a minute later, Mounier did grab the second goal to give the hosts a healthy half-time advantage.

Two minutes into the second half, Alexandre Lacazette finished well to reduce Montpellier's lead and get Lyon back into game.

The home side were awarded a penalty on 59 minutes and Cabella stepped up to slot home and make it 3-1. He got his second goal of the game on 66 minutes.

Cabella was instrumental again two minutes later when he crossed to Montana, who headed home to make it 5-1 and all but secure the points with 20 minutes left.

Lyon's misery was compounded on 83 minutes when Maxime Gonalons was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.
