Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez says that he "cannot do miracles every year" after edging the club towards top-flight safety despite minimal financial investment.

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has warned that he "cannot do miracles every year" after seemingly guiding the Magpies to Premier League safety this term.

The Spaniard gained promotion from the Championship last season at the first time of asking and has kept the Magpies in the top flight with very little financial backing, leaving the coach to suggest that he will need more investment to take the club's fortunes further.

"I cannot do miracles every year, so then you have to have the tools to be sure that you can do your job," said Benitez, according to Sky Sports News.

"I like to win, I want to win games and I want to win trophies. I want to be capable of competing and if you want to compete in the Premier League or this market, then you have to compete in everything. Then if you have the tools to compete, you can win.

"I'd like to do that and at the same time, I like to improve players, coach players, follow a business plan, a realistic business plan in modern football. I have no problem with that because I did it in the past."

Newcastle take on Everton in the league on Monday evening as they look to firm up a top-half finish.
