Newcastle United charged over betting logo on Under-18s kit

Premier League club Newcastle United are charged by the Football Association over their Under-18s side wearing kits bearing the logo of a betting company.

Newcastle United have been charged by the Football Association over the club's Under-18s team playing in kits bearing the logo of a betting company.

The Magpies are sponsored by China-based online gaming firm FUN88, and the first-team shirts have its logo on the front.

In a statement, the FA claimed that the Premier League club's offence relates to being in breach of the governing body's kit and advertising regulations.

The specific rule reads: "In the case of a team comprising players all under the age of 18 years on 31 August in the current season, the appearance on or incorporation in any item of clothing of any reference whatsoever to a product, service or other activity which is considered by the Association as detrimental to the welfare, health or general interest of young persons, or is otherwise considered inappropriate, having regard to the age of the players, is prohibited."

The FA has not clarified which match the charge relates to, with Newcastle appearing to wear plain striped shirts in their most recent fixture on Saturday, a 7-0 defeat at Everton.

Newcastle have until 6pm on Tuesday, March 27 to respond to the charge.
