USA ask Swiss authorities to extradite seven detained FIFA officials

The USA ask Swiss authorities to extradite seven detained FIFA officials who were arrested in May on corruption charges.

The Swiss authorities have announced that the USA have asked for seven FIFA officials who were arrested in May on corruption charges to be extradited.

Overall, 14 people were indicted for allegedly receiving or accepting bribes of more than $100m (£60m) during the 1990s to the present day.

Seven of those 14 individuals, one of whom is vice-president Jeffrey Webb, are the subject of a formal request of extradition by the USA to the Swiss Federal Office of Justice.

It has been confirmed that the accused will be given a hearing on the extradition requests and they can challenge any ruling in court.

A statement from the Swiss authorities read: "The FOJ will grant the persons concerned or their lawyers a period of 14 days in which to respond to the request. This time limit may be extended by 14 days if sufficient grounds exist. Drawing on the request, the hearings and the responses of the persons concerned, the FOJ will then rule on extradition within a few weeks."

Meanwhile, a successor to outgoing FIFA president Sepp Blatter is expected to be elected in December.
