The FA have been urged to investigate Joey Barton’s free transfer from Newcastle to Queens Park Rangers over claims that £2.5m fees were involved in the switch.
Agent Willie McKay is alleged to have made more than £1.3m from the deal and a further £1.2m is unaccounted for, according to The Sun.
The controversy seems to arise from the suggestion that McKay, Barton’s agent, actually acted for QPR in the deal and not the player.
Officials from both QPR and Newcastle have refused to give details on the transaction, while a spokesman from the FA has refused to comment on whether or not an official inquiry has begun.
Barton signed for QPR last month after publicly expressing his displeasure about the Newcastle setup. He made his debut for the London club as captain against his old team on Monday.
