Evening all! Sports Mole's live Champions League coverage for the 2015-16 season concludes from Milan as Real Madrid face Atletico Madrid in the final. Tonight's clash is a repeat of the 2014 final, when Real Madrid equalised in the 93rd minute, before going on to win the match 4-1. Atletico were so, so close in Lisbon. Can they triumph this time around? Let's hope for an entertaining night of action from the San Siro.

Kickoff in Milan is not actually for another two hours, but be sure to remain with us for all of the build-up and indeed the team news, which is expected to land in the next 50 minutes or so. It will be fascinating to see just who Zinedine Zidane and Diego Simeone have placed their faith in tonight. Both managers have had some injury scares over the last week or so. Cough, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Tonight's match will be the 213th meeting between Real Madrid and Atletico in all competitions. Real Madrid have 107 wins to their name, Atletico 54, while the remaining 51 fixtures have finished level. It would be fair to say that Real Madrid have dominated this clash throughout history, but Atletico's recent record against their neighbours is very, very impressive. Will that continue tonight?

Indeed, Atletico have won seven of their last 16 games against Real Madrid in all competitions – suffering just four defeats in the process. Incredibly, before that run, they had failed to win any of their previous 25 with Los Blancos, which is an indication of how far they have come under Simeone.

As expected, the vast majority of matches between these two teams have taken place in Spanish football. This season in La Liga, the points were shared in a 1-1 draw at the Vicente Calderon last October, before Atletico recorded a 1-0 victory at the Bernabeu in late February. Atletico have won two of their last five meetings in all competitions and Real Madrid just one.

Tonight will be the fourth time that the pair have met in a European tie. Their first fixtures came in the 1958-59 European Cup semi-finals. Real Madrid won the first leg 2-1, but Atletico prevailed in the return. That forced a replay, which Real Madrid won to advance into a fourth consecutive final.

It would be another 55 years until their next meeting, which came in the 2014 Champions League final. Diego Godin's 36th-minute header looked to be securing a first crown for Atletico, but Sergio Ramos levelled in the 93rd minute and Real Madrid ran away with it in extra-time. It finished 4-1 thanks to goals from Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo, but Atletico will be out for revenge in tonight's match after going so, so close in Lisbon. Many feel that their time has now arrived.

These two teams also met in the 2014-15 quarter-finals. After a goalless first game at the Vicente Calderon, on-loan Man United striker Javier Hernandez struck the only goal in the return to send Real Madrid into the semi-finals once again. It would be fair to say that they have some history in the European Cup, but Real Madrid have certainly had the better of it when it comes to this competition.

Real Madrid have reached the final of the European Cup for a 14th time, which unsurprisingly, is more than any other team. They have won 10 of those finals – also a record, including the last four. They missed out on the La Liga title to Barcelona by a single point, but it would be some achievement if Zinedine Zidane could deliver yet another European Cup to the Bernabeu this term.

Atletico, meanwhile, will play their third European Cup final tonight. They lost out to Bayern Munich after a replay in 1974 and as mentioned, were beaten by Real Madrid in the 2014 final. Interestingly, this is the third time in the last four years that the Champions League final has been contested by teams from the same nation. The only surprise is that Barcelona are not one of the sides in the final.

As a result of this final, there will be a Spanish winner of the European Cup for the third consecutive season. Sevilla also beat Liverpool to win the Europa League for a third consecutive season and it would be fair to say that Spanish football is currently dominating the European game.

Real Madrid's European record against Spanish opposition is won 10, drawn five and lost three. The last time that they lost to a domestic rival in Europe was the first leg of the 2010-11 semi-final against Barcelona. Atletico, meanwhile, have won seven and lost only three of their 13 other European games against Spanish sides. Something has to give tonight and kickoff is now not too far away!

As mentioned, Real Madrid fell just short of Barcelona in the race for the La Liga title this season, while Atletico's challenge ended on the penultimate weekend of the season. Real Madrid actually won their last 12 league games, which matched their best run since December 2014 under a certain Carlo Ancelotti.

Barcelona just managed to hold off the pressure from the capital, however, to claim the title by a single point from Real Madrid. Two weeks ago, Zidane's side ended their league season with a 2-0 victory at Deportivo La Coruna. Ronaldo hit both goals at the Riazor to ensure that he hit 50 or more club goals for the sixth season in a row. He has shaken off a slight knock to make tonight's contest.

Ronaldo will enter this match having scored 16 times in the Champions League this season, which is one short of his own record from the 2013-14 campaign. In all, Ronaldo has 94 Champions League goals to his name – 78 of which have come in the white of Real Madrid. Quite staggeringly, Ronaldo has 78 goals in 74 European games for Los Blancos. The man is just an absolute machine.

Atletico, meanwhile, ended the La Liga season in third position on 88 points – two shy of Real Madrid and three behind Barcelona. Simeone's side conceded just 18 league goals in the 2015-16 campaign, which was the best goals against record in Europe's top five leagues. Jan Oblak, meanwhile, kept 24 league clean sheets – more than any other goalkeeper in Atletico history.

Antoine Griezmann proved to be Atletico's star man, however, and the Frenchman will enter this match on 32 goals for the season. He hit 22 in Spain's top flight and has seven in the Champions League this season. A host of clubs are believed to be keen on the forward, but Griezmann is widely expected to sign another new long-term contract at the Calderon. What a fine player he has become!

It has been another fine campaign for Atletico, but Diego Simeone will be a touch concerned that his team have lost two of their last three games in all competitions. The first of those was a 2-1 defeat away to Bayern in the semi-finals of the Champions League, but Atletico still managed to advance on the away goals rule (2-2). The second, meanwhile, came at Levante on May 8.

Atletico did end their La Liga season with a 2-0 victory at home to Celta on May 14, however, and like Real Madrid, have had two weeks to recover and prepare for this match. Right, that time has reached us. The team news is just filtering through from the San Siro so let me bring you up to speed!

No surprises in the Real Madrid XI tonight. Ronaldo has indeed shaken off a slight knock to start in a front three that also includes Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema. Casemiro starts over Isco and James Rodriguez in the middle of the park, while Dani Carvajal is selected at right-back over Danilo. It is the team that was expected to take to the field and Zidane has not made any surprise calls!

Atletico boss Simeone, however, has made a couple of interesting calls. Stefan Savic has been picked to start at centre-back over Jose Gimenez, while Augusto Fernandez joins Gabi and Koke in the middle of the park. That will allow Saul Niguez to move further forward and support Fernando Torres and Griezmann in the final third. Fit-again Tiago is on the bench for the Red and Whites tonight.

So there we have it. The two teams are in and we are now little over 45 minutes from kickoff on this mild evening in Milan. Both sets of players will soon join us on the pitch for their warm-ups and it must be said that the atmosphere inside the stadium is already bouncing. What a way to end the Champions League season – Real Madrid versus Atletico at the San Siro. The fans are enjoying it already...

ROUTE TO THE FINAL – REAL MADRID! Right, let's start with Real Madrid. The Spanish giants were drawn into Group A alongside Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmo. In truth, it would have been one of the biggest shocks of all time if Los Blancos had not made it through in either first or second and the Spaniards won five of their six group games to finish top of the section.

Real Madrid scored 19 goals in their six group matches and only conceded three times in the process. It was a very comfortable progression and they were then drawn with Roma in the last-16 stage of the competition. Roma impressed in Serie A during the 2015-16 season, but Real Madrid were too far strong – winning 2-0 both home and away to breeze into the quarter-finals once again.

It would be fair to say that Real Madrid were handed a kind quarter-final draw, but Wolfsburg gave them a serious scare. Indeed, the German outfit recorded a 2-0 victory in the first leg to put the pressure firmly on Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, but Ronaldo – who else – hit a stunning hat-trick in the return to ensure that Zidane's team made the semi-finals. It was Ronaldo in an absolute nut-shell.

Playing in their first European Cup semi-final, Premier League side Manchester City were Real Madrid's opponents in the final four. A tight first leg at the Etihad finished 0-0, but Real Madrid won the second leg 1-0 in Spain to advance. It was far from convincing from the Spanish giants, but they have performed when it matters and will play for an 11th European Cup in Milan tonight.

ROUTE TO THE FINAL – ATLETICO! Simeone's side were drawn into Group C alongside Benfica, Galatasaray and Astana. On paper, it was a tricky and potentially dangerous section for Atletico, but as was the case for Real Madrid, it would have been a big surprise if they had not made it through when all was said and done. Ultimately, they won the section on 13 points – three ahead of runners-up Benfica.

Atletico actually lost at home to Portuguese outfit Benfica in their second group match, but recovered impressively to win four of their six group matches and only concede three times in the process. In the round of 16, the capital club were drawn against Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven, who had surprisingly pipped Manchester United to second position behind Wolfsburg in Group B.

PSV took Atletico all the way to penalties after two 0-0 draws, but the Spanish outfit held their nerve to overcome the plucky Dutch club. Atletico's reward for beating PSV was a quarter-final tie against the favourites and reigning champions Barcelona, who at that point were absolutely flying across the board. Atletico had Fernando Torres sent off in a 2-1 first-leg defeat at Camp Nou, but sensationally won the return match 2-0 in Madrid to dump the holders out of the competition.

Overcoming Barcelona was a spectacular achievement for Atletico, but it did not get any easier as they were paired with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. A 1-0 first-leg win in Madrid placed Atletico in the driving seat, however, and they advanced on away goals after a 2-1 loss in Germany. They had to ride their luck against Bayern, but did enough to make it through.

Should Simeone deliver the crown to Atletico tonight, he would become just the third non-European coach to win the European Cup – the first two were also from Argentina – Luis Carniglia for Real Madrid in 1958, 1959 and Helenio Herrera for Inter Milan in 1964 and 1965. Can he do it?! We shall see!

Zidane, meanwhile, could become the seventh man to win the European Cup as both a player and coach, following in the footsteps of the likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Frank Rijkaard, Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff. Zidane never lost to Atletico during his playing days with Real Madrid – winning six and drawing two of their eight meetings. Right, it is just about time for my pre-match prediction.

PREDICTION! This is very, very tough to call. Strong cases can be made for both teams, but I just have a feeling for Real Madrid. Atletico will be out for revenge from the 2014 final and it would not surprise me one bit if they triumphed. That said, I have to pick and I am just, just siding with Real Madrid.

KICKOFF! Here we go then - a few minutes later than expected. It must be said that there is a sensational atmosphere inside the stadium as Atletico officially get the 2016 final underway in Milan...

... it is the 125th game in this season's Champions League, and indeed the last. Already something for referee Mark Clattenburg to deal with as Koke flies into a late challenge with Casemiro, which brings a furious reaction from Pepe. I think, think that he might see one or two yellow cards here!

As expected, it has been a very cagey start, with both teams just attempting to settle. Atletico make some ground down the right, but Saul cannot squeeze a cross into the box and Real Madrid resume with possession of the ball. The first goal - if there indeed is one - could be vital tonight.

First half-chance for Atletico as Koke meets a loose ball inside the Real Madrid box, but his scuffed effort is comfortable for Navas. Down the other end, Real Madrid break away and Gabi fouls Bale...

... SAVE! What a save! Stunning from Oblak as the Atletico goalkeeper somehow keeps out a close-range Casemiro effort. Bale delivered a wonderful free kick into Casemiro, who looked certain to finish from close range, but Oblak stopped the ball with his feet. Sensational stuff!

No bookings thus far, but there have been some very tasty challenges! Juanfran hacks Ronaldo to the ground before Ramos bundles over Torres. Busy opening eight minutes for the referee!

Atletico's defence is being put under pressure in the early exchanges and it would be fair to say that both Bale and Ronaldo are fired-up. Real Madrid force another corner as Kroos has a strike blocked by Savic, but the set piece is played short and ultimately cleared. High-tempo stuff here!

Carvajal absolutely flattens Griezmann. No booking though! Good grief it just had to be!

BOOKING! Spoke too soon - Carvajal (Real Madrid) is indeed booked.

Saul threatens to release a strike inside the Real Madrid box after driving past Kroos, but Navas is out to claim at the vital moment. Real Madrid are still on top, but Atletico are seeing more of the ball. It must be said that the opening 14 minutes of this contest have absolutely flown past here.

Breakthrough! Real Madrid take the lead in the 15th minute of the contest as Kroos's free kick is flicked on by Bale and Ramos is on hand to poke home from close range. What a moment!

There was certainly a hint of offside about that goal, but the linesman kept his flag down and Real Madrid are ahead. Atletico need to find a way of settling after a relatively slow start in Milan.

Atletico would have wanted to frustrate Real Madrid in the opening 20, 25 minutes, but Simeone's side are now very much up against it. That said, there is still plenty of time left for things to change at the San Siro. Real Madrid have been fired up from the moment the first whistle was blown though.

Atletico's back four need more from their midfield at the moment as Real Madrid continue to break the lines. Ronaldo hits one from distance, but Savic is on hand to make another smart block.

Half-chance for Atletico this time, but Juanfran misses the target from distance. In truth, it has been very comfortable for Real Madrid goalkeeper Navas thus far and this final is already 25 minutes old. You just get the feeling that Atletico need to score the next goal in this contest.

Real Madrid again work the ball into a wide position and Ronaldo delivers towards the far post, but Oblak is on hand to claim. Atletico just cannot get into the game as things stand in Milan.

Atletico enjoy a venture forward and manage to force a corner from Pepe, but Koke's delivery is comfortable for Navas. Eventually the ball is recycled and Koke attempts to deliver towards the far post, but it is too strong and Real Madrid can resume with a goal kick. Still 1-0 Los Blancos here.

SAVE! Oblak is forced to get down and make another smart save from Benzema, who had drilled an effort towards the far post. Real Madrid are much more threatening in this match.

Griezmann hits one from distance, but it is a comfortable save for Navas once again.

Super save from Navas, who keeps out a volley from Griezmann, but the Atletico attacker was in an offside position. Much better work from Atletico as Saul found his teammate free inside the box.

Atletico are starting to enjoy more possession, but Real Madrid are dropping back and look very comfortable at the back. Torres has to come very deep to get the ball and Real Madrid clear again.

No real chances to report in the last few minutes and it would be fair to say that Atletico have managed to slow Real Madrid in the final third of the field. Los Blancos might be ahead, but this game is far from over and Griezmann hits another effort into the arms of the waiting Navas.

CLOSE! Griezmann once again for Atletico, but his low strike is wide of the post. The Frenchman is the one player for Atletico looking capable of levelling the scores it must be said.

Almost at the break and Real Madrid still lead courtesy of that Ramos finish in the 15th minute. Atletico wanted offside and they might well have a case, but it was very, very close indeed.

Just the one additional minute to be played at the end of the first period.

So there we have it. The referee brings the first period to a close with Real Madrid leading 1-0 courtesy of a 15th-minute goal from Ramos, who bundled home from close range. Atletico have had a couple of dangerous moments through Griezmann, but Real Madrid deserve their lead here.

STATS! Atletico, surprisingly, have actually just shaded the possession with 52%, while they have had five attempts - three of which have been on target. Real Madrid, meanwhile, hit the target with two of their five first-half attempts. Just the one yellow card - Dani Carvajal in the 11th minute.

BENCH WATCH! Isco, James Rodriguez, Lucas Vasquez and Jese Rodriguez are all on the bench for Real Madrid tonight, while Atletico boss Simeone has the likes of Angel Correa, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Tiago in reserve. Still plenty of football to be played in the 2016 European Cup final.

You would have backed Griezmann to level the scores, but his effort smashed the woodwork and it is a massive let-off for Real Madrid, who have made a fairly slow start to the second period here.

REAL MADRID SUB! Real Madrid are forced into a change as Carvajal, who looks to have pulled his hamstring, leaves the field for Danilo. Carvajal had been on a first-half booking for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid were comfortable for long spells of the second period, but Atletico are now the team on the front foot and I would be surprised if we had seen the last of the goals in 90 minutes. Juanfran delivers another terrific cross towards the far post, but Danilo does enough to head behind.

Just a reminder that it was Ramos who equalised for Real Madrid in the 2014 final, before Los Blancos went on to win 4-1 in extra-time. This final is far from over as Atletico continue to threaten.

Real Madrid still look shell-shocked as Atletico continue to threaten. Torres has another half-chance for Simeone's side, but heads wide of Navas's near post from inside the box.

Marcelo delivers a super ball into the Atletico box, but there are no takers and it remains 1-1 with little over two minutes of normal time to play in this Milan final. What a contest it has been!

Wonderful scenes inside the stadium as Real Madrid celebrate, but almost all of the Atletico players are in tears. It is so tough on the Red and Whites once again - they have come so close, just like in 2014. However, it is Real Madrid who have landed this trophy for an 11th time.

Real Madrid are up, plenty of handshakes and happy faces. Zidane has delivered the Champions League crown in his first season - incredible. Their hands will soon be on the trophy here!

The trophy is aloft and Real Madrid are officially crowded 2016 winners of the Champions League. It is an 11th European Cup for Los Blancos and their second in three seasons. Club president Florentino Perez can hardly contain himself and why not. It is Real Madrid's night in Milan!
