Cristiano Ronaldo injury doubt for Real Madrid opener against Real Sociedad

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt for the club's opening La Liga fixture against Real Sociedad because of a knee injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a fitness doubt for Real Madrid's La Liga opener against Real Sociedad on August 21.

The 31-year-old has been nursing a knee injury, which he suffered during Portugal's 1-0 victory over France in the Euro 2016 final almost four weeks ago.

The prolific attacker, who scored 51 goals in 48 matches in all competitions last season, has been given an extended break due to his participation at the European Championships.

Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has already ruled Ronaldo out of the European Super Cup final against Sevilla in five days' time, and it is not yet certain whether he will be in the team for the start of the season.

"Right now he still has his injury," The Guardian quotes Zidane as saying. "Obviously he wants to be back but we need patience and for him to be calm. He will be back with us soon in Madrid."

Ronaldo, who helped Madrid win the Champions League last season, is currently on holiday in the United States.
