Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayer Leverkusen play out scrappy draw

Shakhtar Donetsk hold Bayer Leverkusen to a 0-0 draw in the Ukraine.

Shakhtar Donetsk have held Bayer Leverkusen to a goalless draw in this evening's Champions League clash in the Ukraine.

The hosts looked dangerous early on, coming close in the 11th minute when Darijo Srna's cross found Facundo Ferreyra at the near post, forcing Bernd Leno into a save.

Shakhtar came even closer in the 35th minute when Srna's ball across the face of goal curled inwards and bounced back off the woodwork.

Both sides struggled to create anything beyond half-chances for much of the duration, but the Ukrainians might have edged their noses in front in the 62nd minute had Ferreyra gotten his volley on target.

There was a flurry of yellow cards in the second period as tempers flared, but both Shakhtar and Leverkusen lacked urgency going forward and looked content with a point apiece.
