Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell has revealed that he feared for his career following a serious knee injury.

The 24-year-old was sidelined for 18 months after he damaged cruciate ligaments in the same knee twice in quick succession.

However, the former Manchester United forward has regained his goalscoring touch after making his comeback for the Black Cats last month.

"People said to me I'd be back stronger than ever, but I did contemplate the possibility it could end my career, but I pushed it out of my mind pretty quickly," he told the Telegraph.

"I always tried to stay positive, but there were days when it was really hard to keep up. There were days when it got on top of me. There were unhappy periods when I was pretty miserable. When I was at the training ground I made sure I was smiling, I didn't want people feeling sorry for me or making a fuss.

"The worst moments came when I was on my own with nothing to distract me. When I was around people, I was happy and positive."

Campbell is expected to feature for the Sunderland when they take on Arsenal in the fifth round of the FA Cup later today (Saturday).
