A hat-trick from Xherdan Shaqiri fired Switzerland into the second round of the World Cup with a 3-0 win over Honduras on Wednesday night.

Here, Sports Mole rates the players to see who impressed and who did not on the night.

HONDURAS

Goal

Noel Valladares: Never the most comfortable with shots or crosses, but just about dealt with what he should have. Did not have much say in any of the goals, but stopped several other efforts. (6/10)

Defence

Maynor Figueroa: Did his best to lead less talented teammates and made a few good interceptions, but was the slightly better player in a quite poor defence. (6/10)

Victor Bernardez: His positioning was all wrong for both of Switzerland's counter-attacks and also did not make much impact in the air against Josip Drmic (4/10)

Brayan Beckeles: Was the less attacking of the two full-backs, but aside from an early pass that went astray did not do a lot wrong. Had little impact overall, however. (5/10)

Juan Carlos Garcia: Had some joy in the first half against Stephan Lichsteiner, but his crossing was just not good enough on a number of occasions. Faded in the second 45 and generally failed to deal with Shaqiri. (4/10)

Midfield

Wilson Palacios: Back in the team after suspension, but did not have a lot of impact on the midfield. Gave the ball away too much in the first half but improved in the second alongside brother Jerry. (5/10)

Jorge Claros: Retained his place in midfield, and was the better of the central players, but despite seeing plenty of the ball was not creative enough with his passing. (6/10)

Boniek Garcia: Started brightly and got forward a lot in the opening 20 minutes or so, but was soon in the pocket of the excellent Swiss left-back Ricardo Rodriguez. (6/10)

Roger Espinoza: Was guilty of trying to do it all in the first half but was not quite on the same wavelength as his teammates, which led to his withdrawal at the break. (5/10)

Attack

Jerry Bengtson: Worked really hard and linked with the midfield in the first half, but his shooting was not on song and missed one or two good chances. (6/10)

Carlo Costly: Did not get into the game at all, largely because the midfield could not find him, and was then substituted just before half time through injury. (5/10)

Substitutes

Jerry Palacios: Came on in the first half for Costly and proved to be arguably his side's best performer. Showed good link-up with his brother and twice caused threat with crosses from the left. (7/10)

Marvin Chavez: Another player to make a difference from the bench. Caused trouble for Lichtsteiner with his direct running and was a real outlet with his pace. (7/10)

SWITZERLAND

Goal

Diego Benaglio: Much more solid than he has been this tournament and was called upon on a few occasions in the second half to keep a clean sheet. (7/10)

Defence

Stephan Lichtsteiner: Good in attack and in defence. Was not really troubled until Chavez came on, but even up against his pace he timed his tackles well. (7/10)

Fabian Schar: Was comfortably the better of the two centre-backs. Went about his business quietly and was hardly beaten in the air or on the ground all night. (8/10)

Johan Djourou: For a team that kept a clean sheet this was a poor showing. Allowed players to get in behind him in several occasions in the second half and should have given away a penalty against J Palacios. (5/10)

Ricardo Rodriguez: Absolutely superb assist for his side's third goal with a 60-yard pass over the top to Drmic. Aside from that he was strong and even managed a goalline clearance. (8/10)

Midfield

Gokhan Inler: Put himself about in a midfield that did not see a lot of the ball overall. Had a couple of attempts at goal, but not his best shooting day. (7/10)

Valon Behrami: Was the deeper of the three midfield players and at times struggled in possession. Was not his sharpest game, but did not do a lot wrong. (6/10)

Granit Xhaka: Like Behrami, did not get much joy in the midfield battle, but held shape well in defence and managed to get forward on a couple of occasions. (6/10)

Xherdan Shaqiri: Was the standout player on the pitch. Started proceedings with a wonder goal and added two more really well-taken goals. Was creative with the pass and skilful with the run all game. (10/10)

Admir Mehmedi: Combined well with Josip Drmic and Rodriguez on the left, but missed twice when really well positioned to score. One of the quieter Switzerland attackers. (7/10)

Attack

Josip Drmic: Was the perfect partner for Shaqiri. He made the right runs to allow the Bayern Munich man to have space and was intelligent on the ball as well to set up the winger for goals two and three. (8/10)

Substitutes

Michael Lang: Came on for Xhaka with just over 10 minutes to go, but did not see much of the ball in order to impress. (5/10)

Haris Seferovic: Made a few good runs and passes in his 15 minutes on the pitch, but did not get a sight of goal in order to add to his one so far this World Cup. (6/10)
