Chris McPhee has left Torquay United by mutual consent, the club has confirmed.
McPhee was transfer listed by manager Martin Ling in May after struggling to hold down a first-team place last season, starting just eight games.
Ling claimed that the club had received a number of loan offers for the player from Conference clubs, but has now decided to release the 29-year-old on a free transfer.
"We have reached an agreement for Chris to leave the club with immediate effect and pursue his career elsewhere," said Ling.
"Chris is very much interested in combining a coaching role with his playing duties and sees his best opportunity with a club outside the Football League.
"I would like to personally thank Chris for his professional attitude and committed approach throughout last season, and wish him the very best for the future."
McPhee was in his second spell with the seaside club, having previously played for them in 2006-2007.
