Tranmere Rovers beat Boreham Wood to clinch return to Football League

Tranmere Rovers clinch promotion back to the Football League after a three-year absence thanks to a 2-1 win over Boreham Wood in the National League playoff final.

Tranmere Rovers have won promotion back to the Football League after a three-year absence thanks to Saturday's 2-1 win over Boreham Wood in the National League playoff final.

The Wembley showpiece game began on an explosive note as Rovers defender Liam Ridehalgh was sent off inside 40 seconds for a two-footed challenge on Ricky Shakes.

Despite their early numerical disadvantage, however, the Birkenhead side took the lead just five minutes later.

James Norwood was the architect, curling a left-wing cross towards Andy Cook, who rose high at the near post to power a header into the back of the net.

In the midst of the celebrations that followed, Tranmere's Josh Ginnelly was hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the crowd and was eventually replaced by Connor Jennings.

Just as it seemed like Rovers would take a lead into the break, Boreham Wood scored in the seventh minute of first-half added time.

Bruno Andrade, completely unmarked in the box, calmly sidefooted home to draw his side level as the half-time whistle blew.

Tranmere began the second half brightly as Jennings and Cook both had dangerous close-range efforts kept out, while at the other end, Andrade saw a free kick parried away by Scott Davies.

Mickey Mellon's charges continued to press, Norwood finding himself just two inches away from connecting with Jennings's low delivery midway through the second half.

Indeed, the aforementioned players were responsible for scoring the goal that sent Tranmere back up into the Football League, Jennings crossing for Norwood to nod home on 80 minutes.

BOREHAM WOOD (3-5-2): Smith; Woodards (Thomas 83'), Stephens, Doe; Ricketts, Shakes, Champion, Murtagh, Andrade; Balanta, Folivi (Quigley 70')

TRANMERE ROVERS (4-4-2): Davies; Monthe, McNulty, Sutton (Harris 45+5), Ridehalgh; Cole (Clarke 9'), Hughes, Norburn, Ginnelly (Jennings 34'); Cook, Norwood
