Shane Long named in Republic squad despite injury

Giovanni Trapattoni names Shane Long in his initial 26-man squad for next month's Euro 2012 playoff even though he was ruled out for six weeks earlier this week.

West Brom forward Shane Long has been named in the Republic of Ireland's initial 26-man squad for their Euro 2012 playoff against Estonia despite suffering a knee injury at the weekend.

The 24-year-old was ruled out for six weeks following a challenge from Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton on Saturday.

However, Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has chosen the former Reading man for the two fixtures which take place first in Tallinn on November 11 before the return leg in Dublin four days later.

Full Republic of Ireland squad: S Given, K Westwood, D Forde; J O'Shea, S Kelly, S Ward, R Dunne, S St. Ledger, D O'Dea, P McShane; G Whelan, J McCarthy, S Coleman, K Andrews, K Fahey, D Gibson, D Duff, A McGeady, S Hunt, L Lawrence; A Keogh, R Keane, K Doyle, S Long, S Cox, J Walters
