Joleon Lescott insists referee made correct call in Danny Graham incident

Joleon Lescott defends referee Mike Jones following his controversial collision with Danny Graham in West Bromwich Albion's goalless draw with Sunderland.

West Bromwich Albion defender Joleon Lescott has defended referee Mike Jones's decision to only book him for an alleged professional foul in his side's goalless draw with Sunderland.

The incident occurred inside a bad-tempered opening 20 minutes at the Stadium of Light as Lescott appeared to bring down Black Cats striker Danny Graham.

Sunderland were angered by Jones's decision to only book Lescott, who was being accused of denying Graham a clear goalscoring opportunity, but the former Manchester City man insists that it was the right call.

"I didn't think I touched him to be honest, so I wasn't nervous. The ref didn't seem like he was going to do anything. Then the linesman gave it," Lescott told BBC Sport.

"At half-time, someone said I pulled him, someone said I tripped him. I thought: Which one was it?"

The result sees Sunderland fall to 16th in the Premier League table, though they are now three points clear off the relegation zone, while West Brom remain two points better off in 14th.
