Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez insists that midfielder James McCarthy must not get "distracted" by speculation over his future.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that the transfer rumours surrounding midfielder James McCarthy must not 'distract' the player.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a switch away from the DW Stadium, with some reports suggesting that a move to Liverpool or Arsenal could be on the cards.

"The last thing he needs now is to be distracted from his good work and the way he is developing," BBC Sport quotes Martinez as saying.

"In January, we are not going to do anything else apart from adding players that can help us in becoming a bit stronger in the way we want to play."

Meanwhile, the Latics currently sit in the bottom three of the Premier League table.
