While St Helens came through their match with few problems on Sunday, Wigan were beaten 36-28 at Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
The high-scoring encounter, which featured 11 tries, was finely balanced before Reece Lyne touched down in the dying minutes to help the Wildcats seal a memorable win.
Leeds Rhinos are now in second place in the table after they came from behind to earn a 38-28 victory at Widnes Vikings.
Despite trailing 16-10 following a hard-fought opening 40 minutes, tries from Kevin Sinfield, Liam Sutcliffe, Tom Briscoe, Danny McGuire and Josh Walters saw Leeds turn the game around.
Meanwhile, Warrington Wolves kept their hopes of a playoff place alive thanks to a 36-20 victory at home to Salford City Reds.
The Wolves opened up a commanding 22-6 lead at the break before Rhys Evans and Ben Currie both went over during the second period to secure a seventh consecutive triumph for their side.
