Andy Murray gives Great Britain lead in Davis Cup

Andy Murray puts Great Britain 1-0 up in the Davis Cup semi-final with a commanding straight-sets victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Andy Murray has put Great Britain 1-0 up in the semi-final of the Davis Cup with a 6-3 6-0 6-3 win over Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

The 28-year-old British number one powered past the 19-year-old Australian to secure victory in an hour and 47 minutes to give the hosts the advantage heading into the second singles rubber on Friday between Dan Evans and Bernard Tomic.

Kokkinakis produced some impressive shots in the opening games of the match but Murray took control when he broke for 4-2 in the opening set, and he took a set lead thanks to a fourth hold to love in five games.

The Scot had found his stride and took six successive games to take the second set, breaking again for 2-1 in the third to canter to victory in front of an 8,000-strong crowd in his home city.

Murray looked fresh after his early US Open exit to ensure his 24th singles win in 26 Davis Cup matches as Britain look to reach the final of the competition for this first time in 37 years.
