Ivo Karlovic has progressed into the second round of the Shanghai Masters with a three-set victory over Marin Cilic.
The Croat triumphed over his compatriot 7-5 2-6 7-6[6] after two hours and 17 minutes of tennis.
There was little to separate the two players in the opening set, with both dominating on their serves. However, Karlovic made a crucial break in the 11th game to move 6-5 ahead, and he went on to serve out the set in the next game.
World number nine Cilic responded well in the second set, breaking Karlovic's service twice on his way to taking it 6-2.
The deciding set followed a similar pattern to the first, with both players giving little away off their service games. Neither could find a breakthrough as the set went to a tie-break, which Karlovic won 7-2.
