Britain's James Ward loses in first round of Shanghai Masters

British qualifier James Ward is beaten in three sets by 16th seed Kevin Anderson in the first round of the Shanghai Masters.

British qualifier James Ward failed to advance past the first round of the Shanghai Masters this afternoon as Kevin Anderson fought back to book his place in round two.

Ward, who qualified for the main draw yesterday, was the first to be broken and went 2-1 down in the opening set before winning four games in a row to surge 5-2 ahead.

Anderson, of South Africa and seeded 16th, had no response as Ward coolly served out the set to love 6-3.

The second set was a much tighter affair and just one break point was offered by either man. It came on Ward's serve and Anderson took his chance before also coming through 6-3.

Anderson had the momentum and raced into a 4-0 lead at the start of the decider before closing out the match 6-2 in one hour and 46 minutes.

He next faces Mikhail Kukushkin in the second round.
