Arsenal triumph in Istanbul

Arsenal beat Fenerbahce 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League plaoff at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

Arsenal have put one foot in the group stages of the Champions League thanks to a 3-0 win at Fenerbahce.

The Gunners did a good job of stifling their opponents in the first half, even if the action was dull at times.

Olivier Giroud had the first effort on goal, collecting the ball from Tomas Rosicky inside the area before shooting wide on the turn.

Arsene Wenger's men eventually took the lead in the 53rd minute, with Theo Walcott getting down the right and squaring the ball for an unmarked Kieran Gibbs at the back post.

A blunder from goalkeeper Volkan Demirel gifted the visitors a second goal in the 65th minute, as he allowed Aaron Ramsey's shot from just outside the box slip through his fingers.

The tie was all but wrapped up when Giroud converted from 12 yards out after Michal Kadlec bundled over Theo Walcott in the 77th minute.

The return leg will be at the Emirates Stadium next Tuesday.
