Liverpool were denied a clear goalscoring opportunity after Raheem Sterling was wrongly flagged offside as he was played through on goal with just Joe Hart to beat.
Midway through the half, the visitors took the lead. Sterling latched onto a pass and rounded Hart, before Philippe Coutinho arrived to slide the loose ball into the net from a tight angle.
Manchester City weren't behind for long and Vincent Kompany levelled the scores minutes later as he met David Silva's corner with a downwards header that Joe Allen was unable to clear off the line.
The visitors came close to scoring their second of the game with a flowing team move, as Luis Suarez latched onto Sterling's lifted ball over the top, before laying it off to Coutinho, who saw his close-range strike saved by Hart.

As the first half entered stoppage time, the hosts took the lead. Navas slid a pass through to Negredo, who saw his effort from the edge of the box find the back of the net, after Simon Mignolet failed to tip the ball over the bar.
Glen Johnson wasted a huge opportunity when the ball broke to him inside the box, but he could not squeeze his attempt past Hart.
Sterling should have scored for Liverpool soon after, as Suarez found him at the back post with a low ball across the box, but he lifted his strike over from close-range.
Liverpool pushed hard for a late goal but could not find the breakthrough, as Manchester City preserved their unbeaten run at home in the league.
