Liverpool equal a European Cup/Champions League record set by Manchester United after beating Benfica 6-4 on aggregate to advance to the semi-finals.

Liverpool have equalled a European record for English clubs first set by Manchester United after advancing to the semi-finals of the Champions League at Benfica's expense.

The Reds welcomed Nelson Verissimo's side to Anfield for the second leg boasting a 3-1 lead from last week's clash and were quickly in the ascendancy following Ibrahima Konate's header.

Goncalo Ramos responded for Benfica before Roberto Firmino's brace, but the visitors' never-say-die attitude came to the fore as Roman Yaremchuk and Darwin Nunez got in behind to finish.

Jurgen Klopp's side still progressed 6-4 on aggregate after playing out a 3-3 draw with Benfica on the night, which saw them advance to the semi-finals of Europe's elite tournament for a 12th time.

Man United are the only English club to have reached the final four of the European Cup/Champions League on the same number of occasions, while Klopp has now made the semi-finals four times - the most for a German coach alongside Jupp Heynckes and Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Liverpool will meet Villarreal in the semi-finals after Unai Emery's side made it past Bayern Munich, while Manchester City scraped past Atletico Madrid to set up a tie with Real Madrid.
