The game's first chance fell to Rennes, but they failed to take it as midfielder Anders Konradsen headed high and wide of the target despite getting on the end of a corner from Paul-Georges Ntep.
Reims looked to hit back and it was Antoine Devaux who almost opened the scoring with an effort from distance, but Benoit Costil produced a good save at his top-right corner.
It was the hosts who were to grab the first goal and it came when Christian Bruls sent a cross into the box, where Mexer met it to head an effort into the top corner, past a despairing Johnny Placide.
Reims came back in the second half, though, and Charbonnier restored parity with a powerful finish into the roof of the net, after collecting Chris Mavinga's cross.
The away side completed their revival with just under 15 minutes to play as Prince Oniangue shifted the ball to Fortes and he made no mistake with a wild strike that rattled into the top corner.
Reims added some icing to the comeback cake with one of the last kicks of the contest, as De Preville finished smartly having been played in by an enterprising Charbonnier.
