Fabio Capello: 'Frank Lampard controversy forced goal-line technology'

Russia coach Fabio Capello believes that Frank Lampard's disallowed goal at the 2010 World Cup has helped to introduce goal-line technology for this year's tournament.

Russia coach Fabio Capello believes that Frank Lampard's disallowed goal for England at the 2010 World Cup has helped to implement goal-line technology for the first time in this year's tournament.

The new technology was used during France's 3-0 victory over Honduras, when Les Bleus' second goal was awarded after the ball was correctly adjudged to have gone over the line.

Capello was England manager for their last-16 clash against Germany four years ago when, with the Three Lions trailing 2-1, Lampard's shot hit the crossbar and rebounded into the goal, only for the officials to rule that the ball did not cross the line.

"I didn't change [goal-line technology]. FIFA changed it," Capello told reporters.

"Did you see the [France] result yesterday? I was with my team, England [in 2010], and was penalised. Experts know that going from 2-0 down to 2-2 makes a big difference.

"This actually helped the case of technology but we paid the price."

Russia begin their Group H campaign when they face South Korea this evening.
