Argentina earn first Rugby Championship victory against Australia

Argentina beat Australia 21-17 to register their first Rugby Championship victory.

Argentina won their first match in the Rugby Championship after coming back from 14 points down to beat Australia 21-17 in Mendoza.

The Wallabies started perfectly with two tries in the opening 15 minutes from Tevita Kuridrani and Scott Higginbotham.

After putting a penalty on the board in response, Leonardo Senatore bundled over in the corner to leave the Pumas trailing 14-8 at half time.

Argentina's hopes of victory were boosted when Nick Phipps was sin binned after the tourists had been warned about their conduct, and the one-man advantage proved crucial as Juan Imhoff scored a try that would give the South Americans the lead for the first time.

Israel Folau looked to have earned another yellow card midway through the second half for tackling a player in the air. However, TV replays showed that Folau had been pushed by Horacio Agulla prior to the challenge and Welsh referee Nigel Owens reversed his decision to the dismay of the crowd.

Australia's biggest problem appeared to be the significant penalty count against them, which helped pin back the Wallabies deep within their own half.

Bernard Foley missed a penalty from inside his own half before he was given another chance to add three points following an infringement around the breakdown area from the Pumas.

Foley, who appeared to have a laser shined in his eye as he was about to strike, struck the post from what looked a makeable kick, leaving Argentina just over 10 minutes to hold out.

When Michael Hooper was sent to the sin bin for a late challenge, the Australians' fate was all but sealed with the Pumas adding a penalty to run out 21-17 winners.
