Derek McInnes believes that Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos deserved to be sent off in Sunday's 1-1 draw between Aberdeen and the Light Blues at Pittodrie.

Derek McInnes has claimed that Alfredo Morelos deserved to be sent off in Sunday's 1-1 draw between Aberdeen and Rangers at Pittodrie.

The Glasgow giants played with 10 men from the 12th minute onwards after the Colombian striker was dismissed for aiming a kick at Scott McKenna.

Although Morelos's dismissal has been criticised by Rangers fans and described as "harsh" by the club in their match report, McInnes was pleased with the outcome of the incident.

"It doesn't matter how hard you kick," McInnes told reporters after the game. "If you kick you put yourself at risk. So I don't think he can have any complaints.

"For me, if you lift your feet and go to kick out and lash out the laws of the game don't say how hard the kick is. He clearly kicked. Discipline is very important."

Aberdeen sit sixth in the fledgling Scottish Premiership table after one game played.
