Reserve teams to compete in Dutch second tier

Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente will enter reserve teams into the Dutch Eerste Divisie next season.

The reserve teams of Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente will compete in the second tier of Dutch football next season.

Part-timers VV Katwijk and Achilles '29 have also been invited to join the Eerste Divisie, which has undergone a shake-up due to the bankruptcy of four professional clubs within the last three years.

As part of the new approach, teams from the amateur leagues can automatically be promoted into the Eerste Divisie without having to apply for permission.

At the same time, teams from the Eerste Divisie can be relegated, which has led KNVB director Bert van Oostveen to declare the deal a "major breakthrough" for Dutch football.

"I am very proud that it's finally possible to promote from the amateur level, the Topklasse, to the First Division, but that also clubs from the First Division can relegate," he told news agency ANP.

"This is a major breakthrough."

SC Veendam filed for bankruptcy in March, joining AGOVV Apeldoorn, RBC Roosendaal and HFC Haarlem on the scrap heap.
