How Arsenal could line up against Newcastle United

Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for Sunday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Arsenal kick off their 2019-20 Premier League campaign at Newcastle United following a busy summer of transfers.

The Gunners broke their transfer record to sign Nicolas Pepe from Lille for £72m, and have also added Dani Ceballos on loan and Gabriel Martinelli to their attacking roster.

At the back, Arsenal left it late, securing the signatures of both David Luiz and Kieran Tierney on deadline day to go with William Saliba, who joined earlier in the summer before being sent back to Saint Etienne on loan.

Manager Unai Emery will have to improvise with his starting XI and perhaps take a gamble on some players due to a few injury concerns going into the game at St James' Park.

Ahead of Sunday's meeting with Steve Bruce's side, Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up.

Possible ARS XI vs. NEW

Out: Hector Bellerin (knee), Rob Holding (knee), Konstantinos Mavropanos (groin), Kieran Tierney (hernia), Mesut Ozil (security concerns), Sead Kolasinac (security concerns)
Doubtful: Nicolas Pepe (fitness), Dani Ceballos (knock), Mohamed Elneny (fitness), Alexandre Lacazette (ankle)

Emery will have to wait until the end of the month before seeing Tierney, who cost Arsenal a fee of £25m, make his debut for the Gunners, but he has a dependable replacement in Ainsley Maitland-Niles at right-back.

A debut for Ceballos may also be delayed, with the Spaniard suffering a knock against Barcelona last weekend. Emery may not want to risk him in such a high-intensity encounter and instead place faith in Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi, both of whom enjoy physical midfield battles.

Further forward, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are both set to start the game having featured against Barcelona, with the latter scoring an excellent goal.

However, the Gunners will be without Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac due to ongoing security concerns after the pair were involved in a failed armed carjacking a fortnight ago.

Up front, Emery will have to take a gamble, with neither Lacazette nor Pepe fully fit ahead of this game. The former has a greater chance of featuring due to appearing in pre-season already, while Arsenal's record signing is yet to train with the squad after receiving an extended break following the Africa Cup of Nations.
