Arsenal step up their pursuit of Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand amid competition from Manchester City, according to a report.

Arsenal have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand in recent days.

The 31-year-old has again been a vital player for the Saints during the 2020-21 campaign, making 29 Premier League appearances, but he will be leaving St Mary's on a free transfer at the end of June.

Arsenal have been strongly linked with the Englishman in recent weeks, and according to the Daily Mail, the Gunners have now stepped up their interest as they look to win the race for his signature.

The report claims that talks over a switch to the Emirates Stadium 'have intensified' since it was announced that the defender would be moving on from Southampton at the end of the season.

Mikel Arteta's side are short of options at left-back, but the North London club will allegedly face competition from Manchester City for Bertrand, who has made 240 appearances for the Saints.

Arsenal are said to be keen on signing at least five new players ahead of next season.
