Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby refuses to sign a new contract, leaving him free to move on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby has refused the club's offer of a new contract, leaving him able to leave on free in the summer.

Holtby's contract with the German giants expires at the end of the season, with the 22-year-old failing to reach an agreement over an extension.

The German international has an English father and has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs including Liverpool and Arsenal.

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt has admitted that the club are disappointed with Holtby's decision.

He said: "We wished that Lewis saw his future at Schalke. But like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar now he has made a personal decision that we respect.

"We are sure that he will give everything up to the last day of the season to make the contribution of our team successful."

The Bundesliga outfit received a huge boost last week when star striker Huntelaar penned a deal to stay in Gelsenkirchen beyond the summer.
