Preview: Atletico Madrid vs. Juventus - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole provides team news, predicted lineups and a full preview of Wednesday's Champions League fixture between Atletico Madrid and Juventus.

Atletico Madrid begin their 2019-20 Champions League campaign against the same opponents which ended their bid for last season's crown at the last-16 stage.

Juventus head into Wednesday's showdown at Wanda Metropolitano having been held to a goalless draw by Fiorentina at the weekend.

With Atletico sitting ahead of each of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the La Liga standings, Diego Simeone will be satisfied with how his much-changed team have started the new season.

Nevertheless, the Argentine would have been disappointed to see his side lose out 2-0 to Real Sociedad at the weekend, especially on the back of needing to overturn a two-goal deficit to get the better of Eibar in front of their own supporters.

Atletico still remain in second position in the table, just a point adrift of Sevilla, but there is little doubt that they must make improvements in order to register a positive result against Juventus.

That applies to all areas of the pitch, despite the likes of Kieran Trippier and Joao Felix both continuing to impress since their summer moves from Tottenham Hotspur and Benfica respectively.

However, Juventus will arrive in Spain also aware that they still need to go through a few more gears in order to repeat their success of previous seasons.

A return of seven points from their first three Serie A fixtures is a respectable return, especially considering the dramatic showdown with Napoli at the end of August.

Nevertheless, failing to find the back of the net at Fiorentina and a mounting injury list has only given Maurizio Sarri more food for thought ahead of facing the La Liga giants.

Sarri will also want to see more from Cristiano Ronaldo, who has contributed just one goal this season ahead of his return to Madrid, a city where he spent nine hugely successful years with Real.

Team News

Goalkeeper Jan Oblak is regarded as a doubt for Atletico having been withdrawn from the game with Real Sociedad due to a head injury.

Antonio Adan is on standby to deputise for the Slovenian, while Angel Correa is pushing for a start after failing to secure a move away from the club during the summer.

Alvaro Morata and Thomas Partey are both expected to miss the game with knee and hamstring injuries respectively.

Douglas Costa, Miralem Pjanic and Danilo are unlikely to feature for Juventus on Wednesday evening after they all suffered injuries against Fiorentina.

The triple blow leaves Sarri with issues at right-back, with Juan Cuadrado potentially being used as a make-shift replacement.

Federico Bernardeschi and Rodrigo Bentancur are also in line to come into the team, although Sarri must decide when to hand Adrien Rabiot and Aaron Ramsey their first starts for the club.

Atletico Madrid possible starting lineup: Adan; Trippier, Savic, Gimenez, Lodi; Vitolo, Koke, Saul, Lemar; Felix, Costa

Juventus possible starting lineup: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Bonucci, De Ligt, Sandro; Bernardeschi, Rabiot, Khedira, Matuidi; Ronaldo, Higuain

We say: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Juventus

With both clubs struggling to put together consistent performances over the opening weeks of the season, we feel that they may cancel each other out in Madrid, placing an onus on avoiding defeat on Matchday One of this competition.
