Fernando Torres: 'Europa League final makes me forget twilight years'

Fernando Torres claims that the knowledge of competing with Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final has minimised the feelings of "knowing that my career is over".

Fernando Torres has claimed that spearheading Atletico Madrid to the Europa League final has minimised the feelings of "knowing that my career is over".

The 34-year-old will be leaving the Wanda Metropolitano in the summer, calling time on his second spell at his boyhood club after a combined 11 years in the Rojiblancos colours.

Atletico have one more fixture this season, however, with Marseille awaiting in the Europa League final at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday night.

Speaking ahead of the game, Torres looked ahead to the opportunity of picking up his first major trophy as an Atleti player, as well as forgetting about the twilight of his career due to the busy preparations.

"Football has given me the opportunity to return to Atletico and fight for titles as a player, and achieving the Europa League trophy would be something special without a doubt," the footballer explained in a question and answer session with Euromision.

"The fact of having reached the final minimises the feeling of knowing that my career is over. We have a very important game ahead and I don't have much time to think about much else."

Torres has won one trophy with Atletico, the Segunda Division title in 2001-02.
