Luis Enrique pays tribute to Thomas Vermaelen

Barcelona's Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen is "a very important player" for his Spanish club, according to head coach Luis Enrique.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has branded Thomas Vermaelen "a very important player" for the Spanish giants.

The Belgian international moved to Camp Nou from Arsenal in August 2015, but struggled with injury throughout his first campaign in Spain.

The centre-back has already made 13 first-team appearances for Barcelona this season, however, and Enrique has revealed his delight with the defender's recent performances.

"Vermaelen is a top-class player. He is doing really well and looking after his fitness. He is really taking the chances he's given and performing very well. He is a very important player for Barcelona," Enrique told reporters.

Vermaelen was strongly linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer of 2015, before penning a four-year deal in Barcelona.
