Barcelona sporting director Deco says that signing head coach Hansi Flick to a new contract is not currently a priority for the club.

Barcelona sporting director Deco has said that signing head coach Hansi Flick to a new contract is not currently a priority for the club.

The 59-year-old officially took charge of Barcelona at the end of May, and he has overseen an impressive 2024-25 campaign to date, boasting a record of 26 wins, four draws and six defeats from his 36 matches at the helm.

Barcelona are through to the knockout round of the Champions League and into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, while they are third in the La Liga table, two points behind the leaders Real Madrid.

There have recently been suggestions that Flick could be offered a new deal, with his current terms due to expire in June 2026.

However, Deco has said that a new contract for the 59-year-old, who lifted the Spanish Super Cup earlier this year, is not currently viewed as a priority.

Barcelona not currently looking to sign Flick to a new contract

"Coaches are always important and are key at all times. We knew what we were looking for with Flick and that is what is happening. He is a coach who manages the players and the dressing room very well," Deco told SPORT.

"We have a squad with very young players, other veterans, and some middle-aged players. There is an imbalance, it is difficult to manage and he is doing very well.

"After Xavi's departure and a tough season, I think we needed an experienced, proven coach who could put order in the dressing room. The squad is a big family, but it is difficult to manage because of the imbalance I mentioned before, with players aged 35 and Lamine [Yamal] aged 17. The coach needs to bring all this together and put them on the same page and Flick has done that.

"We are moving too fast in everything here. We went from euphoria to despair in a minute. Things are going well and other coaches have gone through this, it is a natural sequence of a project that works. We have won a title, the sensations are good.

"The most important thing is that the members want it. We are also very happy with the work that is being done and if everything continues like this, we will work so that it continues for many years. From here, the time will come, but it is not a priority now for us or for him."

When are Barcelona next in action?

Barcelona will continue their La Liga campaign with a clash against Rayo Vallecano on Monday night, before travelling to Las Palmas next weekend.

The Catalan outfit will then host Atletico Madrid for the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on February 25, with March then opening with a home La Liga fixture against Real Sociedad.

Barcelona's second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Atletico will come at the start of April, while they will be in action in the knockout round of the Champions League at the start of March.
