Barnsley midfielder Stephen Dawson apologises for confronting fan

Stephen Dawson apologises for his angry reaction and confrontation with a Barnsley supporter after Saturday's 5-0 defeat at Huddersfield.

Stephen Dawson has apologised for his angry reaction and confrontation with a Barnsley supporter on Saturday.

The midfielder had to be restrained by teammates after receiving abuse from a Tykes fan following their 5-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town.

"My emotions were high and I shouldn't have reacted the way I did," Dawson, who will make a donation to the Barnsley Hospice, told the club's website.

"I'm really disappointed with what was said to me but I need to be professional enough to take that. The fans have paid an awful lot of money to come and see us and to lose 5-0, I can understand their frustrations and disappointment.

"I can only apologise on my behalf and assure all the supporters it won't happen again."

Stoke City loanee Brek Shea was also said to have been involved and the club said that he was "under investigation".

A separate statement read: "The matter is currently under investigation and a further statement will be made upon Brek's return from international duty (with the United States).

"Having the backing of our supporters at Barnsley Football Club is of paramount importance, especially as we head into the final months of our current campaign.

"Supporters are the lifeblood of the club and are the one constant throughout."

Saturday's heavy defeat saw Barnsley drop to the foot of the Championship, where they are two points adrift of safety.
