Ivan Toney eyes long-term Barnsley stay

Ivan Toney admits that he would be interested in extending his initial 28-day deal at Barnsley should he make enough of an impact during his Newcastle United loan spell.

Newcastle United youngster Ivan Toney has admitted that he is hoping to make enough of an impact during his time at Barnsley to earn a longer contract.

The 19-year-old linked up with the Tykes earlier this week on an initial 28-day deal, having made just three appearances for his parent club since joining in the summer.

Toney failed to get off the mark in Tuesday night's 2-0 Football League Trophy win over York City, but he is confident in his own ability to "spice things up" at Oakwell.

Speaking to the club's official website, he said: "Hopefully I can add goals to the side. I didn't manage to get on the scoresheet on Tuesday but hopefully I will on Saturday if I'm playing.

"I thought coming here was the best option for me. I'm happy to be here and hopefully become a big signing for the club and if it all goes well, I'll be looking to extend that.

"I want to add positivity to the side, not that it isn't here already, and spice things up a bit. I'd like to try and turn things around while I'm here, it's a great club and it should be doing better."

Toney has yet to make a real impact at first-team level from the bench at Newcastle, but he did collect the Under-21s Player of the Month award for October before being sent out on loan.
