Jack Butland: 'Barnsley was best choice'

Goalkeeper Jack Butland believes that his loan switch to Barnsley will help him earn a place in the England squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland has said that his loan move to Barnsley could aid his hopes of being named in the England squad for next year's World Cup.

The 20-year-old joined Barnsley on a three-month loan switch in September.

Butland has admitted that he needs to play regular first-team football if he is to force his way into the plans of England boss Roy Hodgson.

"The target is to get to Brazil. It will be difficult to get there unless I'm playing regularly and playing well," Butland told the Barnsley Chronicle.

"I had a few options but I came to Barnsley because it's a challenge that will improve me more than any other. I might get more to do than going somewhere higher in the league. There's more decisions for me to make and more saves for me to make.

"It will be much more satisfying to help get this team away from the drop zone in my three months here than it would be to perhaps be around the play-offs. I've enjoyed my time here so far."

Butland moved to the Britannia Stadium in the summer after finishing last season on loan at former club Birmingham City.
