Jupp Heynckes: 'Right time to retire'

Former Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes insists that he chose the right time to retire from management despite having led the club to their best ever season.

Former Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes has insisted that he chose the right time to walk away from management.

Heynckes ended a 34-year coaching career last summer, bowing out in style by leading Bayern to the most successful season in their history, winning the Bundesliga title in record fashion and also claiming the domestic cup and the Champions League.

His final league match came against Borussia Monchengladbach, where he spent more than 20 years as a player and manager, and the 68-year-old was delighted with how he said goodbye to the game.

"Finishing my career against Borussia Monchengladbach, where I started, was fantastic," Heynckes told reporters.

"The reason for the treble was FC Bayern - it was the right club, but also a top team with lots of character. Last year was a great time for me to bow out."

Heynckes is among the candidates to be named the FIFA Coach of the Year at this evening's Ballon d'Or ceremony.
