The home side pulled ahead after 17 minutes when Robert Lewandowski latched on to a long ball from Mats Hummels and slotted it home beneath Rene Adler's legs.

However, Dortmund's lead lasted just a minute as Artjoms Rudņevs tapped in Dennis Aogo's square-ball from close range.

Son Heung-Min almost made it 2-1 to Hamburg just moments later but saw his effort come off the post.

The South Korean attacker, though, did not have to wait long to etch his name on the scoresheet, as he put the visitors in the lead on 26 minutes.

Son received Jeffrey Bruma's pass, turned away from Hummels, cut inside the right and fired in past Roman Weidenfeller.

Things went from bad to worse for Dortmund just after the half-hour mark when Lewandowski was dismissed following a confrontation with Rafael van der Vaart, who was shown a yellow card.

Jurgen Klopp's side thought that they had restored parity on the stroke of half time when Mario Gotze shot home from close range, but it was ruled out for an offside infringement from Marco Reus.

Hamburg too went down to 10 men after the break, as Bruma was given his marching orders for his challenge on Reus on the hour mark.

However, two minutes later Hamburg scored their third goal of the afternoon, Rudņevs heading home Van der Vaart's cross at the far post.

Son made it 4-1 to the visitors at Signal-Iduna Park when he tapped in Marcell Jansen's pass a minute from full time.
