The first chance of the game came after just 40 seconds, as Scott Arfield's long ball fell to Danny Ings, who bore down on goal and attempted to fire past the onrushing Steve Harper, but the effort bobbled just wide of the post.

In the third minute, Hull countered through Abel Hernandez, who scuffed a shot wide of Tom Heaton's goal, and still within the first 10 minutes, Kieran Trippier's mistake set Sone Aluko on goal but Jason Shackell intervened in time.

Burnley very nearly opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Ings forced a save out of Harper with a volley, before Paul McShane almost sliced the rebound into his own net, with Robbie Brady clearing off the line.

With just seven minutes until half time, Ings attempted an audacious effort from the halfway line, which flew five yards wide, while at the other end McShane headed over.
