Gianfranco Zola rules out Cagliari exit

Gianfranco Zola insists that he will not resign as manager of Cagliari despite a run of form which has left them 18th in the table.

Gianfranco Zola has said that he has no intentions of stepping down as Cagliari manager.

The former Chelsea star took over as the manager of the Rossoblu in December, but they have now lost four of their past five league matches following today's 2-1 defeat against Hellas Verona.

This run has left them 18th in the Serie A table and five points away from escaping the relegation zone, but Zola is adamant that he will not leave.

"Resignation? I am thinking of other things," he told Sky Sport Italia. "Obviously I am not happy with the result. I take my share of the responsibility, but we must understand how to get ourselves out of this situation.

"Verona scored a goal on a scenario we had studied during the week. That means we are fragile and that damages our performances.

"Verona were able to bring home the full result with minimal effort. It's a shame, as the players are working hard and I thank them. At moments like this we really need our fans. I knew it would not be easy, but we have to show our character."

Zola has previously managed West Ham United, Watford and Italy's Under-16s.
