Chelsea frontman Daniel Sturridge admits that he is hopeful of featuring at the Olympics despite suffering with viral meningitis.

Daniel Sturridge has revealed that he is confident of being fit enough to represent Great Britain at the Olympics later this month.

The Chelsea striker has spent the last 24 hours receiving treatment for suspected viral meningitis.

However, the 22-year-old has admitted that he remains "optimistic" about his chances of keeping his place in Stuart Pearce's 18-man squad.

"The Chelsea medical team have been closely monitoring everything and they and the doctors and nurses at St Mary's Hospital have been outstanding throughout," said the former Manchester City frontman. "Thankfully, I am starting to feel a lot better and I am optimistic about being able to make the Olympics.

"I am fortunate to have received many wishes of support and I want to thank everybody who has sent messages. It is much appreciated."

Sturridge joined Chelsea on a free transfer in 2009.
