Sepp Blatter: Penalties are a tragedy

Blatter seeks penalty alternative

Sepp Blatter believes that penalty shootouts take away the "essence" of football and is calling on Franz Beckenbauer to find an alternative.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has urged former Germany international Franz Beckenbauer to find an alternative to 'tragic' penalty shootouts.

Beckenbauer is the head of a task force for the world governing body and Blatter believes that penalties should not decide the winner of a match following Chelsea's Champions League victory over Bayern Munich, which came down to penalties.

"Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," said Blatter. "Football is a team game, when it goes to one against one football loses its essence.

"Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer, with his Football 2014 group, can show us a solution, perhaps not today but in the future."

Meanwhile, goal-line technology is continuing to progress as experts intend to test one of the systems during England's friendly against Belgium on June 2.
