Jamie Carragher has praised Chelsea defender David Luiz for his "outstanding" performances so far this season.

Eyebrows were raised when Antonio Conte brought Luiz back to Stamford Bridge in the summer, with the Brazilian having developed a reputation as an error-prone defender during his first spell at the club.

However, the 29-year-old has helped Chelsea to record nine clean sheets during an 11-match Premier League winning run, prompting former Liverpool defender Carragher to include him in his team of the season so far.

"Luiz, there's no surprise in his performances but at the start of the season you would be surprised if he's in there," he told Sky Sports News.

"But whether it's him changing or Conte has got hold of him, I think it's possibly a bit of both, he's been outstanding and deserves to be there."

Chelsea currently boast the best defensive record in the Premier League and will spend Christmas six points clear at the top of the table.
