David Luiz has insisted that going a season without winning a trophy can be considered a failure for Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho's side failed at the semi-final stage of the Champions League on Wednesday as Atletico Madrid recorded a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, and Luiz believes that there are no excuses for the club if they are unable to beat Manchester City and Liverpool to the Premier League title.

"It could be a shit season," the Brazilian told members of the media. "We are a big club and we want to win trophies. Everyone speaks about results.

"You can say it is a shit season if you don't have trophies in a season at a big club, that is true.

"Everyone here is human and can make mistakes - that is normal. But you cannot hide yourself from any situations."

Chelsea return to action when they host Norwich City on Sunday afternoon.
