Fernando Torres: 'Chelsea midfield old and slow'

Fernando Torres claims that Chelsea's midfield is old and slow ahead of their weekend clash against Sunderland.

Fernando Torres has claimed that Chelsea's midfield is 'old and slow' as he continues to struggle in the new season.

The striker, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool for £50m in January, has scored one goal in 27 games since his high-profile transfer, but he is hoping a new midfield with the likes of Juan Mata can help him find his golascoring touch again.

"Chelsea is, between the English teams, maybe the least English," the Spaniard told ligabbva.com.

"That's because of the kind of player Chelsea has - an older player, who plays very slow, who has a lot of possession, and that's what the club is trying to change now.

"It's normal that it takes some time; it's not easy to find midfielders because the best are already in the best teams and that's why I said that the arrival of Mata is going to give another pace to the team."

He added: "In the next matches, you will see another pace, and I hope the midfield will adapt to that pace. That is what you need in the Premier League. If not, then the teams don't work."

The Blues, who travel to Sunderland today, currently sit fourth in the Premier League.
