Chelsea transfer news: Bayern Munich director comments on Mathys Tel speculation

Bayern Munich director Christoph Freund comments on speculation that is linking Mathys Tel with a transfer to Chelsea.

Bayern Munich director Christopher Freund has suggested that they would prefer to retain the services of Mathys Tel.

Speculation emerged on Monday evening that Chelsea may explore their long-standing interest in Tel over the coming weeks.

That development came on the back of Bayern allegedly identifying Christopher Nkunku as their priority target for the January transfer window, a deal that would theoretically negatively impact Tel.

Although the 19-year-old is said to have recently insisted that he wishes to remain at the Allianz Arena for the foreseeable future, he remains on two starts and nine substitute outings for the campaign.

With Harry Kane the undisputed first choice in Vincent Kompany's attack, it remains to be seen how Tel can earn much-needed regular football going forward.

What is Bayern's stance on Tel?

Tel's last contract extension was as recent as March, the France Under-21 international penning fresh terms until the end of 2028-29.

As such, Freund has suggested that Bayern have "a clear goal" regarding his development, yet he has left the door open to holding discussions over his future.

Freund said, as quoted by The Standard: "Mathys Tel is a very important player for us. We are in very good contact because he's a great talent and should play an important role for us. We have had many discussions.

"Our clear goal is for Mathys to make his breakthrough with us. We are very happy with our squad, quality and quantity wise.

"Of course if a player is unhappy, we can talk about it. Our clear plan with Mathys is for him to make his breakthrough here."

Would a swap suit all parties?

From Chelsea's perspective, it has always been stated by Enzo Maresca that he wanted to retain the services of the France international, despite him playing second fiddle to Nicolas Jackson.

That said, having the chance to generate a big-money fee for the versatile attacker and replace him with a younger player with potential fits Chelsea's transfer model.

If Tel were to move to Stamford Bridge, he would want assurances over game time and would likely be provided with starts in the FA Cup and Conference League at the very least.

The finances could prove to be the determining factor. Chelsea are not in a position where they can make a loss on any swap deal or separate negotiations, and that is something that Bayern will have to accept if formal discussions are held.
