Nathaniel Clyne: 'Competition for places is healthy'

England defender Nathaniel Clyne says that competition for places with the Three Lions is healthy after he impressed during his first game at Euro 2016 against Slovakia.

Defender Nathaniel Clyne has admitted that he was pleased with his performance during England's goalless draw with Slovakia on Monday night.

The display of the Liverpool full-back was one of the few positives that were taken from England's failure to secure top spot in Group B, and while manager Roy Hodgson received criticism for making six changes to a winning side, Clyne insists that creating competition for places in the team is healthy.

The 25-year-old is quoted by BT Sport as saying: "I was pleased with my performance. The manager made changes and we all came in and done well.

"We dominated the game from start to finish. It was a bit frustrating that we didn't get the goal which would have won us the game.

"It's good that everyone is fighting for positions, makes the team healthy, makes everyone push harder."

England are next in action on Monday night when they face the runners-up of Group F in Nice.
